Austin Texas Resources for Families of Disabled Children

Since I live in San Marcos Tx, just south of Austin, I have found a lot of really great resources to help with finding the best care for your child and your family.

We could never have made it this far without the help of a lot of groups around the community.

ARCIL — Our friends at ARCIL have been helpful in coming up with funds for various necessitities as well as putting us in touch with other community support groups that have helped us with various issues. They have helped us with our rent and utilities and with getting supplies we needed for Emily’s care.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas— Whenever we go to the Hospital with Emily, we try to stay at the Ronald McDonnald House. Since it is located on the southern edge of Dell Children’s Hospital, it is perfect for our stays. They help with rooms, family style dining, and other things as well. They also help with bus passes if needed so you can go to other local hospitals. When Emily was in the NICU at St. David’s, they helped us get bus passes to go back and forth. If you want to help support the RMHC, check out their WISH LIST. These are all items they need to continue helping the families like ours who stay with them.

River Kids Pediatrics— All of our therapies come through River Kids Pediatrics. They work in our home so that we don’t have to travel to all the therapy appointments and they have helped us with finding many of the other resources that we share through this page and the podcast.

Viva Pediatrics — Viva provides Emily with private home nursing care and has helped us with finding really great nurses to help out. If you need private nursing, they are an amazing resource, and have been really helpful for our family. We have had several nurses, and they have all been wonderful working with Emily. Check out their available services here and see if they can help you.

Specially For Children at Dell Children’s Hospital—  Almost all of Emily’s Doctors are found at Specially Pediatrics at Dell Children’s Hospital in North Austin. Although it is a bit of a drive, it is great having all of her specialists in one place, and these doctors have all been really great in helping us through these struggles.

Any Baby Can, San Antonio— Any Baby Can has been really helpful in getting funding to help buy some of the special equipment that Emily’s insurance wouldn’t pay for. They have a wide range of services that they offer to families of disabled children, so check them out and see if they can help your family.

Texas Parent to Parent Conference– This is an awesome conference for networking with other parents and families of disabled children. Not only are we planning to go, I am putting together a speech proposal, and trying to give a presentation for families struggling to find balance. Texas Parent to Parent offers a lot of resources to help families connect with other families struggling with similar issues.

I am working to put together a more extensive list of resources as we find them, so check back with this page and see how we can help you find the necessary resources to better manage daily life with your disabled child.
